Fiji Day 6 & 7 – Easter Weekend

Fiji Day 6 & 7 – Easter Weekend

Fiji Day 6

It’s Saturday! Today we got to go and visit other villages in the district of Nakelo. This meant taking a walk around the village, then going to their community hall and having some food and talking with the people there. We visited four in total! Two of the villages also had a karva ceremony. We then got to go to the beach! This was one of the highlights of the trip so far. The whole beach was lined with Palm trees and the water was the perfect temperature. After the beach, we went back to the village we are staying and we had lots of fun painting the ladies and their girls’ nails. After this we headed off to bed!

Fiji Day 7

Today is Sunday, which means we’ve been here for a week! Time has gone super fast! After another delicious breakfast, we got into our team uniform and went to a church service! At the service our team sung a couple of songs and a few of us shared, including myself. After the service we had some lunch at the village and spent the rest of the afternoon there. I spent some time reading a book to get some rest and we also played some card games with the team which was really enjoyable. After tea, I got to ring my family which was lovely! It was nice to have a relaxing and easy day because the week ahead is going to be super busy!

Fiji Day 3, 4 & 5 – The First Village

Fiji Day 3, 4 & 5 – The First Village

Bula! So we went to stay in the first village on Wednesday and their was no internet reception so I haven’t been able to do daily posts! So I’ll fill you all in briefly on the last 3 days! On Wednesday we went to the Nakelo District School and I did some work in the kindergarten which was heaps of fun and the kids were so cute! After this we went to the first village and met our host families who we are staying with for a week. We had a karva ceremony which was really interesting, then that night we went back to the school for dinner. I was quite homesick throughout this day but it’s getting better! Yesterday (Thursday) we went to the school again, where we did some science experiments, then we had an Easter church service. The singing there was incredible! After this we had another karva ceremony and then we talked with some people from other villages. We then spent the rest of the night back in the village playing with the kids and that was so much fun! We also got our hair braided that night. Today we went to another church service and then we spent the rest of the day with the other people in our village. About an hour ago we drove back to Suva and we’re about to go and watch a movie. And even better, we got gold class tickets so I’m looking forward to that. Tonight we’re going back to the village for 5 more nights so I won’t have much reception, so I’ll do another post as soon as I can!

Fiji Day 2

Fiji Day 2

Bula! So today was our first full day here in Fiji! After having some delicious custard pie for breakfast, we had a tour of the homes of hope campus. We then helped out the workers by mixing cement and cleaning a newly built deck. Normally this work load would have been easy but in 30 degree heat it was very tiring! After this we had some lunch and a short rest before we had a lady come and explain to us the work she does with human trafficking and children who are sexually abused. We then went to buy supplies for the school and after many u-turns we found the shops we needed too! While doing all this driving around Suva we saw the best and the worst – tiny little tin shacks bunched together compared to large, nice looking houses. It’s much more diverse range compared to Australia. After we found the supplies we needed, we did some shopping for ourselves and bought some food. I tried some cheese and onion loaf and it was so yummy! We then went back to homes of hope for tea but I was feeling full so I had a shower instead. After we all got back together, we had another person come speak with us, this time about street work. Now I am lying in bed about to go to sleep, so I’ll finish this up now!

Fiji Day 1 – Homes of Hope

Fiji Day 1 – Homes of Hope

Bula! So I’m finally in Fiji! We arrived at 5:30 in the morning, which meant that the rest of the day went really slow. It felt like tea time when it was only 2pm! We drove from Nadi to Suva (with a few stops on the way) to stay at homes of hope. When we got there, at about 11am, we got settled in and had a quick rest before going in to the city of Suva. While we were there we had some lunch, exchanged our money and bought sims for our phones. I wasn’t expecting to get any internet but I decided to buy a data sim, that way I can blog and keep in touch with people on facebook. When we got back we all had the afternoon to laze around because we were all super tired from not getting much sleep on the plane and it was also really hot! After a rest, I had a cold shower which made me feel so much better! We had tea with the mums staying at homes of hope and there young kids – they are so cute! After tea, our team had a quick meeting then we went straight to bed and straight to sleep!
